The New York Giants are not expected to announce their plans regarding their starting quarterback for Week 12 until they return from the bye on Monday at the earliest, but according to one report, the door is not completely closed on Daniel Jones as the starter .
Dianna Russini from The Athleticsappear on The Dan Le Batard Showstressed that while no decision was made Friday, she is hearing Jones could keep his job for another week.
“From the conversations I’ve had, Daniel Jones may be here as the starting quarterback for a few more weeks.” @DMRussini Lately she’s been hearing about the New York Giants’ quarterback positions.

“Right now, based on what I’ve heard and the conversations I’ve had, Daniel Jones may be here as the starting quarterback for a few more weeks,” Russini said.
“I’m not sure this is completely finished. But we’ll know more this weekend, when they return from their bye and meet their quarterbacks.
The thought of Jones keeping the starting job for a few more weeks likely won’t sit well with a growing portion of the fan base that is fed up with the missed throws, poor results and decisions that are part of Jones’ game. Still, Russini notes that in evaluating the quarterback situation, the Giants might believe that of their three quarterbacks, Jones still gives the team the best chance to win games.
“You have Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll, despite the confidence of their owner John Mara. It may seem like they are safe, but we know how this goes. Even if the owner says if they go there and lose in a really bad way and it’s ugly football, it will be very difficult to get those guys back there,” Russini said.
“In the minds of Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen, we don’t really know what Drew Lock is about. I think Daniel Jones can still give them the best chance to win.”
Jones obviously has the $23 million injury guarantee which plays a huge role as part of the ‘football decision’ that has to be made. Schoen told reporters this week that the contract and injury guarantee alone won’t be decisive in determining which direction they go at quarterback.
As Russini noted, if the Giants continue to lose games, it could spell the end for one or both of Schoen and Daboll, despite team co-owner John Mara saying last month that he didn’t expect to see any would make changes to the general manager. or head coaching spots after the season.
If the Giants stick with Jones and he continues to struggle or worse, gets injured, the Giants would be in even more trouble as they have another game four days after their Week 12 home date against Tampa Bay when they visit Dallas . Cowboys for a Thanksgiving date. Since the team is unlikely to hold a full practice during that four-day turnaround, whoever starts next Sunday will almost certainly get the start on Thanksgiving.
The other thinking behind potentially retaining Jones is to see if the team, despite the 2-8 record, isn’t mathematically eliminated from the playoffs and makes any kind of late-season push. Of course, that could be asking a lot from a team that has struggled this season, but it is a possibility that cannot be ruled out.
The biggest reason for benching Jones, however, is the $23 million injury bond he would collect next March if he couldn’t pass a physical exam. That said, if the team sticks with Jones, they could try to negotiate a lower guarantee or eliminate it, as the amount was not guaranteed at signing and therefore is not guaranteed to be collected.
However, from Jones’ perspective, agreeing to eliminate the guarantee would be a bad thing, although potentially lowering it could be a way to meet the team halfway.
The question, however, is whether Jones would be willing to do so if the Giants ask, considering how they tried to acquire a new franchise quarterback in last year’s draft, something that left a bad taste in Jones’ mouth as did his work against the Eagles in a blowout loss a few weeks ago.
